If you’re going shopping, then there’s something to add to your list. Yogurt. After my last post on my mango and yogurt breakfast, I got a lot of questions about the yogurt I used.
In case you’re wondering, all yogurts are not created equal, it’s not everything that is packaged and labeled yogurt that is truly yogurt.
When it comes to yogurt in Nigeria what you see is not what you get. All that claims to be yogurt is not yogurt. Some are just corn starch, sour flavor, milk flavor and gelatin.
Real yogurt must contains probiotics; live active culture to help regulate your digestion and strengthen your immune system. It helps prevent constipation and belly bloating. So yes, it helps in reducing belly fat, but, only when you combine it with other healthy lifestyle changes.
The protein in yogurt is not only good for post workout recovery but essential if you want to repair your tissue after exercise and to build muscle.
Before I give you my 3 favorite yogurts, here’s what you should look out for in a yogurt:
1.
Does this yogurt stay in plastic containers or tetra pak out in the sun or in a shelf in a store without a controlled cold temperature, all day, week and sometimes 1 month or 2 months?
OR
Does it maintain a cold chain – Packed and transported in refrigerated trucks and taken to malls with constant power supply and kept in controlled cold temperature till consumption?
2.
What does the label say – Milk flavor, corn starch, gelatin and sour flavor?
OR
Does it have milk and live active culture?
I chose these 3 yogurts because they passed the 4 most important test for me:

- They have live active cultures
- They maintain a cold chain from manufacturer to mall where it is stored in a cold and controlled space
- They contain milk.
- The nutritional content is right for me
Most yogurts that pass these 3 checks are always a little bit more costly. Some brands have also built a name and reputation of making quality yogurts and maybe more costly.
Here’s the 3 yogurt I use , I chose them based on their nutritional content, the above checklist and my taste bud.
Rev up Yogurt ( that’s what I used for my mango and yogurt breakfast)

Its low in sugar and fat. It has a very smooth, creamy and rich texture. If you don’t like the low sugar taste, you can always add banana. I used mango.
Dolait Yogurt (I drink this after my workout)

It comes with a straw so you can stash it inside your bag and drink on the go. I also use it for my smoothie and for my son’s school lunch.
Farmfresh (Try the vanilla)

I love the vanilla flavor with its creamy, silky and rich taste. I use it for my smoothie and as my pick me up when I’m running low on energy and need something to drink fast, especially during a photo shoot. It also comes in strawberry flavor.
So there you have it in no particular order.
Here’s the 4 quick checklist again
- Live active culture
- Milk
- Cold chain
- And nutritional content

Onyi, Hollandia does not contain live active culture. So, it doesn’t have the benefits the other yogurts I listed have.

Hi Chioma, Please check if it has live active culture. That is the main thing every good and healthy yogurt must have to give you the health benefits you desire. I’ve not tasted or seen their products. Check the label and cross check with the things i mentioned you should check before buying yogurt, especially, live active culture. Have a great day.

Thank you for your post. I was looking for the best yogurt brands in Nigeria since I need to increase my intake to manage acid reflux and to generally improve my vaginal health (*Sighs* I couldn’t get a synonym to exclude ‘vaginal’). I’ve always heard of Farmfresh and now that you recommend it, I’ll go for it, try other brands and publish a review post on my blog.
I must add that your fitness articles are also great. I’ve only checked out the topics. I will subscribe right away, visit some other time to really read, and maybe enroll. This skinny girl can make use of some curves and pelvic strength.

Good evening. Have you tasted KYLIN YOGHURT(SWEETENED) made in Portharcourt. Though the label doesn’t contain Live and Active Cultures, but to my assessment it is resonably creamy, thick and tangy. I also think it wasn’t pasteurized, hence might contain Live and Active Cultures. Thank you.
