The Whole Truth About Water And Your Weight Gain.
If you have ever taken water, climbed a scale and watched in mounting shock and unbelief as the needle climbed up and showed you’ve gained weight, you’re not alone.
But does this really mean that water made you gain weight?
You must understand that weight gain comes from the calories, the excess calories in the food you eat, and in your drinks including smoothies, juices, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
Does water contain any calorie?
Water does not contain carbohydrates, protein or fat. What good drinking water contains is calcium, magnesium, sodium and other essential nutrients.

Why then does your weight go up when you drink water?
What happens when you drink water is that your body gains temporary weight…… water weight, because water has weight, but it does not have any calorie so it’s not fat.
As soon as you pee or sweat or your kidney processes that water, your weight goes back to normal.
Water is an essential element in our lives as more than 60% of our body is made up of water.
As you go about your daily activity you sweat, you pee and your cells and organs uses water to function properly.
WATER HAS A LOT OF BENEFITS:
- It helps in weight loss: When your body doesn’t get enough water it may hold on to water and this can make you feel bloated, but when you drink enough water, it helps your body to release retained water in your cells. This helps you to lose weight.
Also drinking water before you eat can help you reduce the quantity of food you will eat and aid in weight loss
- It helps in clearing toxins from your body
- It clears and protects your complexion
- It keeps you alive
It is generally recommended that you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, but the actual amount of water you drink eventually, may depend on the weather.
On hot days most people drink more than on cold days.
This is because you sweat more on hot days and need more water to keep you hydrated but on cold days you may not sweat and your body water needs may be lower.
As you drink water, you need to be mindful too, because even though it may not cause weight gain, excessive amount of water in the body can lead to Hypernatremia.
Hypernatremia occurs when the kidney is not able to process the excess water in the body. This may happen when someone drinks a lot of water at one time. The water ends up diluting the sodium in your blood and may cause confusion, vomiting, seizures, swelling of the brain and muscle spasm.
Water doesn’t make you fat.
So stay hydrated and don’t water till you’re very thirsty before you drink water.
